Atrisco Heritage Academy High School

Language Arts Department

April 30, 2018

Dear Future Honors or AP English Student,

Congratulations on your selection of a Pre-AP (Honors English 10) or Advanced Placement Junior or Senior English class for next year.  We are excited to welcome you to our innovative, creative, and challenging curriculum designed to prepare you for collegiate courses in the future.  Selecting one of these courses is a huge step, but one you will not regret.  Welcome aboard!!

We would like to share some really important aspects about our courses.  This curriculum will require:

  • Homework of 30 minutes minimally on a daily basis, per class

  • High standards for completion of work because of the weighted grade of this class

  • Daily attendance to receive instruction and application of concepts necessary to complete assignments

  • Assignments must be turned in on due date. Late work is not permitted.

  • Outside of class reading on a consistent basis and assigned schedule

  • A positive attitude towards learning new, exciting, and rigorous material to challenge you and prepare you academically for success

To best prepare you for a great start next year, we are encouraging summer reading.  This assigned reading will be available either through our bookroom, online, or through a public library. These selections are literary texts that will lay a foundation for the upcoming year of comprehension, interpretation, and analysis. A written assessment of these skills will be given on

Tuesday/Wednesday after Labor Day, September 4th-5th in your classes.

Reading Selections per Grade level:

10th Grade Honors:

The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho

Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger
